Help!!

Erin-14 months- a.k.a. RIRIN
Karen-3 yrs.old- a.k.a. ATE

That's right,my two girls are sucking their thumbs. At first,it didn't bother me--being told that it was a sign that the girls would behave well,etc..etc. Seeing how challenging everyday is with them, I begin to wonder.;)

Now that Ate is 3 yrs.old, her thumb sucking is affecting her teeth and of course her speech. I can clearly hear that when she pronounces her S. What bother me most is seeing other older children sucking their thumbs. It worries me that if don't do anything now, they would end up like that, too. I really don't want my girls to grow up with that habit.

Do you have any suggestion?

the natural thing to do would be to try to restrain them from doing that, or have you tried 'pacifier?'

ouch... what things they like to play? I think...keep their hand busy with stuff will stop the tumb sucking... :)

but they really cute and lovely..
we have the same problem. my soon to be two year old sucks her thumb. it got a little better but she still does it.
Mayet, perhaps you want to read this related article :

I remember that I was also shucking my thumb (when I was a toddler, of course). I stopped it by myself after I saw a doctor on television mentioning bad effects of thumb shucking :D

I remember my classmate back when was 12, she was already menstruating and then when she finds time to nap, she'd be found under her desk lying on the floor sucking her thumb...yuck! No finesse, no lady manners. LOL

I hated her for being a 'sucker' but we were best pals at the time. I can imagine how her daughter would be like 10 years from now.

I took Psychology in college and there I realized that sucking is a proof of how strongly attached the child is to the mother. This unusual bond will develop into a habit unless not tolerated.

She is still very young. I sucked my thumb until I was 5 and I have turned out okay (at least I think so). If you really want it to stop, pediatric experts suggest something unpleasant tasting on the thumb or gloves. I also like Dea's suggestion of keeping their hands busy.

My son did suck his thumb when he was younger. My daughter didn't. Pero parang mas makulit pa tong girl kesa sa son ko. :)

Anyway, just refrain them from doing that. Ganun kasi ginawa ko sa girl nun napansin ko na parang magtthumbsuck na siya noon. Naagapan naman. Bsta you just restrain them pag nakikita mo. Effective naman un.

Take care! :)

my niece was doing thumb suck till her grade school i think my sister put some pepper on my niece hands for her to stop doing it. And i think it helps.
Beautiful girls! No suggestions, though, The Boy started sucking his thumb when they placed him on my belly immediately after he was born... we went home and gave him a pacifier, because I reasoned, that I could take away. He used it until he was 3.5.

I wish I had the answer for you. My brother I think read every book there was and tried all sorts of ways. My niece ended up sucking the ear of her ducky.
Your two girls are so pretty!

My sister was a thumbsucker until she turned two or three (I think). My Mama had to do something about it because there´s a bunion that´s forming on her thumb after years of thumbsucking and it looked gross!

Try putting something bitter tasting on the thumb to discourage them from thumbsucking. It worked for my sister. ;)

i don't know what to suggest, I DON'T REMEMBER my daughter sucking her finger when she was that age.

and I don't recommend putting chili on their hands either so they won't suck them anymore, lol! maybe they will change along the way :)

I have a cousin when she was 3 and she still has this habit of thumb sucking, her mother put something bitter on her thumb while she's asleep. And from then on, she will no longer tempted to thumb suck because she complained that her thumb tastes bitter... :)

Hi Mayet! Primarily, thumb sucking would give bad teeth formation to your girls if not stopped. The gum would be pushed outward and the teeth might protrude. My big kiddos had that bad habit when yet little kids. What I did was wrapped their thumbs with gauze big enough not to enter their mouth. ha ha..glad it worked!

Your girls are very cute!I hope they'd stop the habit. Good day to you Mayet!

Ya! that's what happened to my teeth. And braces are too expensive. I have regretted it. It's better if you stop it as early as possible

My daughter did that until she was 7 and had to give her an ultimatum.

I tried coaxing her and even bribing her with gifts in exchange of her thumb-sucking. Those did not work.

I searched the internet and found the solution. I forgot the exact brand I bought but I got it from the pharmacy. It's a solution you put on the thumb. It's safe and was created to stop thumb-sucking.

I got it here in Dubai from one of the pharmacy. I asked my daughter what it tasted like, she said "YUCK!"

It was the one thing that stopped her completely from sucking her thumb ever again. Whenever she was tempted, I'd shake the bottle right in front of her and she didn't even reconsider...LOL. Just check the net for various brands.

Our mid-week get away in Dijon

Dijon, one of the cities in France, was the destination of our mid-week get away. The city, which is well known for its mustard,is a 3-hour train ride from Genève via Lausanne. As I've mentioned in my previous post ,this was my first time to visit the city. We arrived mid-day to a gloomy surrounding and headed to Quick, sort of Jollibee here. Yet,the real treat was in the old town. Walking on the paved street for me was like being transported to another era. Aside from Musée des Beaux-Arts Dijon, we were able to visit Cathédrale de Saint Bénigne and the Notre Dame de Dijon. However, due to time constraint we were not able to visit other places. Our evening meal was in Le Théâtre des Sens, a small but cozy restaurant and where I've tried escargot. Yes, I did and blame it on the kir! Our dinner was really good, the waiter was very cheery and accomodating. We stayed at the Hotel Des Ducs where we spent the rest of the night watching crime scene investigation. Ah! the joy of havin
