The bell
rang and she glanced up as I held her hand. “Nanay”(Mother) she uttered. I didn’t
understand so I kept on walking with her. Suddenly she stopped and bravely
said: I can handle this! I looked
at her with admiration coupled with disappointment. No more
whining, no more tiny arms entwined around my legs, nor the famous “I want to
stay with you forever”.
She kissed me and waved goodbye.
